Texas v. TikTok (DTPA)

Industry: Technology and platforms · Track: Litigation and Enforcement

The Attorney General's DTPA action against TikTok and ByteDance, filed January 2025. On September 10, 2026 the 250th District Court, Travis County (Judge Cory Liu) granted partial summary judgment finding liability on two DTPA claims (content-removal misrepresentations and Restricted Mode misrepresentations). Penalties and remaining claims were set for an October 2026 trial. On September 29, 2026 the Fifteenth Court of Appeals (No. 15-26-00172-CV) ordered that all trial-court proceedings be stayed until the court reaches a final decision on TikTok's stay motions or until further order (TikTok argues it may seek interlocutory review as electronic media under Texas law; the court said it needs more time to decide whether a longer stay is warranted). The stay is procedural only and does not alter the September 10 liability finding. No later disposition of the stay motions appears in the sources reviewed as of October 13, 2026.
